November 3rd I might be set up at "The Ultimate One Stop Shoppe" at Surline Elementary from 3:45-8pm

November 19th I'll have a table set up at St. Joseph's School and doing sketches/cartoons/caricatures (and dressing as Santa for a couple hours)

November 20th I'll behosting "Customer Appreciation Day" at Nuttall Art Studio from 3-6. It might be a costume party.

Dec. 3rd I'm an artist at the Comic & toy convention in Grand Rapids from 9-3, then participating in the Downtown West Branch Art & Wine Walk from 6-9pm, either at Nuttall Art Studio or a participating business.

Sometimes, I start on a project and I have to walk away for a moment, and when I get back to it, I'm filled with happiness and fulfillment. My Hero series has become one of those projects. My Sammy Hagar Jumping series gives me such energy and now this first painting of Sergio Aragones` makes me just happy. I want to keep working on it, like right now as I sit at home. BUT, I have to wait until tomorrow... Until then, here's a little video I made and an updated photo of the Sergio painting.

I thought I'd share this. A kindergarten teacher at my kids' school passed me last month and (I think she was being polite) commented how she'd been thinking about me doing a painting on her class window. I told her "sure" and she looked shocked. Anyway, a couple weeks later I came in and painted this Fall scene (took 5 hours)in the 7 Acre Wood. Oh, and ignore the little girl. She wouldn't move.

I've been in the studio since 9am trying to decide what to work on. Should I work on something I want to do or something that might sell? It's now 1pm and I'm still torn. I don't like having to spend time on this. I'd hoped that I would get enough business that i wouldn't have to worry about making art for money purposes only (I started a painting of John Lennon. I'm not a fan at all but Lennon usually sells). i've offered specials that doesn't actually make me money, but it's something coming in, but nobody's interested in artwork. i'm flustered, angry and depressed. i'm trying to make my dream a reality. i'm trying to make something of all the work and education I've put into my art my entire life, but it's become such a struggle that my family's suffering and my spirit is just plain fried. I don't want pity purchases, mind you. I want to expand my outlet beyond Facebook. But it takes money that I cannot make.

How I Spent My Weekend

I've been avoiding doing art battles because (1) I can't afford to enter and (2) I've grown weary of the same riga-marole of loading the van, unloading the van, work, wait, and lose. Then load the van up, unload again. Honestly, I entered this time because the coordinator of the event, Kathleen Baker, was in need of artists to participate and I wanted to help. I figured if I didn't win, I might at least sell the piece I create (although it may only be for $20, but it pays for gas). This art battle was part of the Hale Yes Balloon Festival in Hale, Michigan. I had to differing factors coming into this art battle, however: I went in expecting to lose, and I was sick. As a friggin' dog. Dizzy spells, coughing, chest and head congestion, aches and pains, etc., etc. I also agreed to do the art exhibit, which began at 1pm and ended at (ugh!) 9pm. The battle went from 4-7pm. This was my set-up for the event

I've been away for a bit. I've been teaching at the Midland Center For The Arts (where I'm scheduled to teach again in October if you have kids in the Midland area interested in drawing cartoons) and my internet is currently out at home, so I'm not online much anymore.
NEW ANNOUNCEMENT:
I know it's not common for people to write about applying for a job, but this is a job I've dreamt of my entire life and never imagined I'd get the opportunity to try out for it. Having said that, I have sent in example artwork in hopes to get the gig of artist for the upcoming POPEYE comic book being published by IDW Publishing next year! I didn't know they were even looking for the creative team, until a friend (who shall remain nameless to protect his innocence)wrote me that he thought I should give it a try and contact the editors. Let's just say that having this friend recommend that I try fot the gig is such a huge compliment and honor that if I don't get the job, I'll have the gratification that this man thought enough about me that he thought of me.
I sent the examples in (although the photography of the examples were crappy, and it may reflect poorly on me) 2 weeks ago and was written that I'll hear from the editor if they hear anything.
So, if you know the editors I'm referring to, maybe you can subtly suggest me?

The goal has been met and the project is a GO! However, if you've been following, my first attempt to raise funds was for $1500. This time it was $700. Less than half of the original goal. $700 is a bare minimum of what I need for this project, so please pledge and keep spreading the word by sharing this blog and/or the Kickstarter link to your friends! The original goal was carefully figured out to ensure all materials and space rental was paid on to continue. With the new goal, I have to pick and choose what I can and can't do. I'm trying Kickstarter again, but this time, I've lowered the goal and reduced the deadline to 5 days. I'm asking people who like my artwork to either back the project (minimum pledge of $2) or at least spread the word about it. You can get more details and pledge HERE
When you pledge, you DO NOT get charged! If the goal is met and the project is successful, THEN you get charged. And it's all-or-nothing: If the goal's NOT met, I get nothing. If the goal's met, I get funded (and if the goal is met and people keep pledging, I get that, too).

The Kickstarter project was a no-go. Not enough funds were pledged to reach the goal. The HEROES series is halted right now and the future of the studio is not looking good. Right now, I have to decide if I want to split any money I'm making between back rent on the studio and bills at home, cutting both short, or focus the money on bills at home. With the Kickstarter project, I'd have used the funds from that solely on the projects and the studio, while using money earned teaching at the Midland Center For The Arts on bills. I know this is the way of the artist. I knew this when I devoted my life to it and to family. I'd hoped it would have gotten better by now, even just a little. I'm not one to give up. Not so much because I'm so darn positive; I'm too damn stubborn.
I would love to try Kickstarter again, but the minimum time frame to raise funds is one month, which would take me into the end of August. I need it now, though. Plus, you have no idea how painful and gut-wrenching it is for me to bug people constantly to give me money. That's not how I want to make a living. It drains the spirit. That's why I tried to make it worth backers' whiles by giving EVERY backer artwork if the project was successful. I want to EARN money, not ask for handouts.

Still offering lessons!

For the next 2 weeks I'll be teaching at the Midland Center For The Arts in the mornings. I am available after 3pm for lessons at the studio. Ages up to 17 is $12/hr and 18-up is $15/hr. Drawing, painting, cartooning, comic book, block printing.

Untitled Rant

Well, the cartooning workshop did not go well. Hell, not one person showed! It went HORRIBLY. With my recent streak of failures and lack of sales, it becomes very easy to get discouraged and depressed. I refuse to give in and give up, though, because, really, my art is all I have to go with. I've put my life into this and cannot back down. Other than the 3 summer months I teach at the Midland Center For The Arts, my art career is my only source of income. THAT is why I push so hard online to get interest in my work and my projects. I try constantly to be discovered by individuals and galleries, with cold shoulders or kind rejections.
However, I have a great deal of appreciation for those who have believed in me, hired me and enjoy my work. When I bitch and moan and complain, it's not about those people. I cherish those people! It's because of them that I've gotten THIS far! I'm not trying to guilt previous clients into buying more (maybe guilt them into spreading word about my work...(:) .

the Smurfs movie looks like little blue sacks of garbage. If it's successful, I'm slapping every kid I come across. I have no problem with the concept of the Smurfs in the big city, but keep them as they should be: classic personalities! Reminds me too much of Alvin & The Chipmunks, but in the cartoons, they HAD those attitudes!From the commercials I've seen, Pappa Smurf is a little grumpy and has attitude, Smurfette sounds like she's voiced by Queen Latifah, with the same SNAP SNAP! attitude, and they're using the "smurf" word in place of vulgarities???? Keep them innocent. Keep them cute. Don't modernize them, or the "fish out of water" affect doesn't work. If they already have "street savvie" when they hit the big city, then what's so great about the experience? It's just Alvin and the Chipmunks all over again, but not done as well.

Youth Cartooning Workshop by ME!!

I know it's short notice, but I'm doing a workshop for children on how to draw cartoons this Saturday, July 16th. There are 2 age groups and 2 times for the groups- 1-3 for ages 9-17 and 3:30-4:30 for ages 8 and under. It will be at Nuttall Art Studio in Downtown West Branch and all the kids need to bring is a pencil and eraser each, and some crayons. It's $7 per kid.
They'll learn how to draw starting with simple shapes, and finishing with an established cartoon character (like Bugs Bunny, Garfield, etc)

Hey, there cats 'n' kittens!
It's been awhile since I updated, but there are a few things in the fire right now.
First off, I won't be in the studio much because my wife and I are teaching at the Midland Center For The Arts Summer Art Camp just about every week this summer. Also, we're moving into a new place.
Secondly, I've been working with Anne Clayton, the OHHS art teacher, in building the "Youth Art Battle" for Downtown West Branch's "Fabulous Fridays" event "Art In The Street". Ages 6-17 create a piece of artwork in a 3 hour time period and the passers-by vote on whose work they like the most (it's broken up into 4 age groups) and the winners from each age group get prizes that local businesses and individuals have donated. And it's all free.
I've organized with the West Branch Library to have a "POPEYE" Day at the library on Thursday, July 7th as part of the West Branch Film Festival (formerly West Branch Children's Film Festival). The movie "POPEYE" will be shown for free in the library and I'll have my Popeye art series on display. I'll also be doing free Popeye sketches for anyone who attends.

I'm giving you crazy kids another deal. I don't know HOW I'm able to pay bills and get my weekly Dairy Queen this way (well, get my DQ. Priorities),but for an 8x10 drawing or painting, you only pay $25 instead of the usual $40!! Now, you can only have up to 2 subjects, because any more than that and the subjects get shrunk down and lose detail. This deal goes until June 10!! DISCLAIMER: It doesn't even have to be for a father! It can be for you or someone else. I don't care!! The sooner you get to me (with the full amount), the better! As you may realize, being a freelance artist in a small town is not exactly fruitful financially. It's an ongoing struggle and often disheartening. Bills at home pile up, studio rent is overdue and dammit, we're down to one roll of toilet paper at the house!! It's because of this that I continually post here and on Facebook and on Twitter that I have deals going or selling certain drawings/paintings dirt cheap (although my work is already pretty reasonable). Having this studio and doing what I love is very fulfilling and uplifting, but every day when I approach the studio, I half-expect to see an eviction notice on the door.
I decided to open the studio because I couldn't get hired anywhere. Hell, I couldn't even get an interview!! I don't have a bad job history (9 years at the same job, 4 at my 2nd job and then later 4 years at another job while working 3 years at another 2nd job). So, I figured, instead of waiting for the phone to ring, I'd give West Branch something they didn't have before: a working artist's studio. It's been a year, and I've been as successful as one can be in an economically-challenged community. But with no money equals no advertising other than free advertising and word of mouth.
Which brings me back to the beginning of this post. I AM selling certain pieces for half price or more and I DO have a new special going right now: Father's Day Special for only $80 for a 16x20 drawing or painting. PLEASE tell your friends and neighbors!

I am in talks with the West Branch Public Library in POSSIBLY showing "POPEYE" from 1980 with Robin Williams and Shelley Duvall. Along with the showing, I would have my Popeye artwork on display in the library and I'm hoping to have some Popeye books available in the library to check out or purchase or something. It'd be a kind of mini Popeye convention. It's not set in stone (don't even know when this would be taking place, if it does), but as info comes forth, I'll keep people updated.

Here are a few new pieces I've done recently. The BB King painting is only 8"x10" oil and I originally painted it for the "Blast The Blues", but it didn't sell. The Sammy Hagar is also 8x10. I just wanted to do a quickie Sammy painting. Tom Petty charcoal was going to be raffled off for the studio's anniversary, but I decided to keep it for sale instead. The charcoal of Sammy Hagar was just for fun. All can be seen in the studio!

April's packed with energy, stress and ALOTTA art for Ol' Nuttall Art!!

TODAY, Saturday, April 2nd I'm competing in an art battle in Bay City called
"Art Clash 2011". I've become very disillusioned with art battles. I think they're great, don't get me wrong. If you're a fan of the arts, you should definitely hit up a few. What bothers me, however, is the judging aspect. I like the idea of the general public voting for their favorite artwork, but after the second battle I did, I noticed that some artists were bringing in their own numbers to vote for them. I usually have 3 people at the most show to the battles I compete in, but some of the artists bring in friends and family that could start a baseball team! I don't mind losing, as long as the artwork that wins is good! (DISCLAIMER: this is a general opinion of the entirety of battles I've done, not just one venue. I've done some battles in 3 or 4 venues altogether). I've seen some nice work get nothing while lesser-quality work gets placed. BUT, and this is what my rant leads to, BUT, this Art Clash is being judged by local artists and instructors from the venue, so quality should overcome quantity. And let's face it, Daddy needs the money!!

This coming Thursday Nuttall Art will be participating in the Ogemaw County Community and Business Expo at Ogemaw Heights High School from 4-9. I'm going to be giving stuff out, sell some raffle tickets (maybe) for the anniversary party, and exhibit some examples of my work and maybe sell some swag.
THEN, Saturday, April 16th will be the Downtown West Branch Art & Wine Walk from 5-9, and the NUTTALL ART STUDIO's 1 YEAR ANNIVERSARY is a part of the Walk! The anniversary starts at 4 and MOMENTS BY M is hosting Nuttall Art Studio for the Art and Wine Walk. OK, I think this is the last thing: April 30th (I think? I have to double check the date) is "Blast The Blues" at Dean Arbour Ford in West Branch, where I'll be on display. This is the third B the B, and the 3rd time I've been a part of it. I try to display blues or rock related artwork and donate blues-related artwork to the auction.

Although I'm stoked about the 1 year anniversary, I'm also a little stressed, because the week before NUTTALL ART is going to be at the OGEMAW COMMUNITY AND BUSINESS EXPO at Ogemaw Heights High School and I'm trying to get stuff around to give away there, as well as at the anniversary party. The anniversary has been integrated into the Downtown West Branch Art & Wine Walk April 16th. I'm the artist and the business is Moments By M Photography, so there will be wine and food served during the anniversary shindig.
At the 1 year anniversary, I'm going to try to give away stuff, have a $2 raffle and have things for sale, so I'm trying to do artwork specifically for the raffle, plus my own projects and commissioned artwork. AND I'm doing lessons still. Right now, this is what I'm looking at to raffle or sell-

April 3rd marks the ONE YEAR ANNIVERSARY of NUTTALL ART STUDIO!!! TO celebrate, I'm hosting a "party" on Saturday, April 16th, 2011 from 4pm-8pm at the studio. There'll be free food, drinks (no alcohol), $2 raffle of specially made artwork and other stuff!
Now, this event DOES take place the same night as Downtown West Branch's Art & Wine Walk (from 5-9), where local artists display their work in downtown businesses (the businesses actually stay open PAST 5 that day!), and those businesses have free wine tasting and food. So, there's plenty to do in the area in those 5 hours! Parking for the studio is down N. 3rd St. across from Morse Clark Furniture. Hope to see you there!

SOOOOO..... know of any art galleries who'd be interested in displaying my work and NOT just want to take my money?
I've found that most galleries I've contacted either (A)want money to exhibit in their gallery (B) aren't looking for artists at the moment(C) they don't reply back or (D) don't feel my work would fit into their gallery.
These are the reasons I haven't pursued gallery shows in awhile. It becomes very discouraging. I've contacted galleries in Michigan and across the country, with no interested parties.

I've been thinking again about being in galleries, I had (or have) a chance to have a solo exhibit at Kirtland Community College, but I started wondering about what would go in it? Should I put a mash-up of artwork,have a theme or exhibit one of my series', such as Jack Nicholson or Popeye? Or both? I could go with a personal hero theme. If the opportunity arises, what do you think my exhibit should have?

Barry Stutesman of Michigan Magazine Michigan Magazine visited the studio today and interviewed me and shot footage of the studio. I think it went pretty well. I'll keep you posted when it airs, where it airs and who knows, I might have a viewing party at the studio (there's plenty of food left over from my Customer Appreciation party, after all)

Well, with the new year, I thought I'd post the first drawing of 2011, the first completed painting of 2011 and the first project of 2011.
The John Wayne is a charcoal that's not quite done for a commission. It's 18x24. The Sammy Hagar oil painting is also 18x24 and is also a commission piece. The final is the first oil painting I've started this year. It's 20x30 (I think).

I re-created the "Popeye Family Picnic" painting, going larger, using palette knife, and zooming out to include more of the bodies. Hopefully, this one won't sell (I shouldn't say that, should I?). Back to Basics

I'd like to work from my own photos again and have been for a few months. I feel like alot of the work I've done for the last few years have been, if not commission work, celebrity-related. This is my newest completed piece from a photo taken in 1998 or 1999. No title as of yet. It's an oil painting. And at the studio (I think it looks better in person, as it were).

There are times where I see another's artwork and just break down. Sometimes it's tears, sometimes it's anger. Chuck CLose is one of those artists. Not everything he does appeals to me, but his work is where I want to be. Another is closer to home (literally) and that's Armin Mersmann. I have worked with him at the Midland Center for the Arts for a couple years now. His insane attention to detail is where I want to be. It pushes me to focus and zoom in on the detail, as does Close's work. You can see Chuck Close's work here and Armin's work here
Then again, I see emotion in others' work whose paintings are looser and more impressionistic as opposed to the photo realism/photo rendering I've practiced half my life. My brush strokes are looser than my pencil lines, allowing a softer feel, but not always intentionally. When I was graduating from college with my BFA, my instructors said flat out that my black and white work has more power than my color work. One of them, after my "BFA exhibit final critique", walked up to me with his hands in his pockets and shaking his head.
"So you're not that good with color" he told me in his Bostonian drawl, "Ya just gotta work more at it, but your drawings and printmaking are very strong. You're good in black and white, but need work in color". Very good to hear the last week of my 4 year stint in the institution giving me my degree in Drawing and PAINTING!!

Well, I hadn't planned on doing the recent Art de Combat at Enchante Gallery, but the morning of I decided to give it a try. If I won 2nd or 1st I can pay on the studio rent,and if I got 3rd I can at least get the entry fee back and a slick 20 in my wallet. I didn't enter the combat until 10 after 5pm (started at 5)and didn't choose a subject until almost 5:30. I gave up and drew Clint Eastwood from "Pale Rider". I was done in a little over an hour, so I walked around for a couple minutes and started on a drawing of Jim Morrison (still not done, though). The Eastwood was bid on in the silent auction, but the Morrison is available and in my studio.
Oh, and I did not place.

I want it clear that I don't give a shit about politics & I don't bitch & moan about changes & the way of the American Politician, because I don't care. BUT I do care about artists who put hard-earned money up to compete in art battles against other artists. I don't have said money so I might not be competing, but I still think you should check out ART de COMBAT this Saturday at the Enchante' Gallery in West Branch, Michigan.

Here's how it works: YOU get to the gallery and pay $20 at the door and get a ticket. You then proceed further and look at the artwork the artists are making (they have 3 hours to begin and finish a piece of artwork). You then decide which piece of art you like the most and write down the number the artist was given and drop your ticket into the designated ballot box. You then can enjoy the food and/or drinks available (pop, water, coffee, beer, booze) at no extra charge. Once you pay that $20 at the door you can eat and drink yourself stupid. Or you can watch the artists, mingle and/or wait to hear the results of the voting. Or you can leave whenever you'd like.
I may not be competing, as I have not had enough business to afford the entry fee for artists. But that doesn't mean I don't believe in these events to encourage the general public to get involved in the arts! You can watch an artist create artwork in front of you! And you can help that artist win money that can help their career or their family! AND there's a Silent Auction during and after the combat where you get a chance to bid on your favorite artwork being created. This piece, for example, was sold for only $40 at an art battle. Bad for me, but great for the highest bidder.

As you can see, our Halloween was a super hero Halloween. Everyone chose their own costumes. I had to run around town to find a round shield and then paint it up to look like Captain America's. I had to search for something that looked like a hammer for Logan's Thor costume. And I pieced together my Green Arrow costume (and every piece of clothing was too damn tight!).

I feel like I'm at a standstill. I have multiple unfinished projects, as well as some commission work to do, but part of what I do is drawing attention to my artwork and I'm not quite sure how to do that. What I've been doing doesn't seem to be enough to get the attention of the general public. Unfortunately, the talent doesn't catch an audience. I have to have a gimick, which I really don't like that idea. I also don't want to concede to the masses, in that I don't want to do popular celebrity art. The "celebrities" I draw or paint are people who I admire or who inspire me. Marilyn Monroe, Kurt Cobain and Hendrix don't inspire me (those being 3 subjects people always say I should do).
So, any ideas on how to get the world to notice me without breaking laws or moving?

I donated this graphite drawing of John Lennon to a silent auction to support Habitat For Humanity. A friend of mine (Tim) pointed out that this year marks the 30th anniversary of Lennon murder, so I figured "what the hell?"
I'm not a fan of Lennon. Sure, he created some great music, but I'm not that into it. I did it because he's considered THE best musician ever by many. I've done Lennon drawings before, and when people saw them, they seemed more into the subject more than the artwork and recognized it and liked it alot. So, I figure if this is to make money, it better be a popular subject.

Ok, this is the drawing I did for the Habitat For Humanity fundraiser in West Branch, Michigan. It seems that anytime I do a drawing of John Lennon, it gets bought and/or tons of comments (whether it's good or not. That's the popularity of John Lennon). That is why I drew him. Not because I'm a fan (I'm not too hot for him. Ready for the hate mail!), but since it's for a fundraiser, I wanted to make something that had a good chance of selling. That's why I didn't do a portrait of Jack Nicholson or Sammy Hagar. I idolize them, but not many people in West Branch want to buy portraits of them.
