Watch me draw?

The other day, I took about 25 minutes to do a drawing of Popeye. It's a large 2 ft by 3 ft drawing. It is available for sale and if you're interested send me a message. I ate a little video of it. This is not real time! Halfway through the drawing my dumb marker ran out of ink so I had to scramble to get some ink and a couple brushes to finish the picture. I'm not sure if I'm going to color the picture or not. It's on very basic drawing paper, so any liquid is going to warp the paper, and I don't have large markers that would color a picture the size with good quality.

I'm still at it.

I haven't posted much at all on this site, because honestly I haven't been doing a whole lot. But I have been working on a comic book. It's not an official thing at all, just something for me to get some ideas out of my head. It's a Popeye story (Big shock). It looks to be a three or four issue long story line. Just fanfiction. I've been posting on Facebook and Instagram every so often some of the updates. I've got one issue drawn lettered inked and colored. I'm working on issue too with the drawing lettering and inking. Here's a quick shot:

This is just a portion of a panel (I don't want to give too much away).
I'm not a good writer, and my technical skills as a "comic book artist" is lacking, but hopefully this project will improve my weaknesses.
I'm taking a long break from doing any realism. I haven't really done any since probably August (it's the end of December now), I think due to lack of interest in my work and a little bit of defeatism. I get that a lot. I'm not done with realism, I'm just taking a break. I'll keep updating about this book and if I have any events or anything going on. If you don't see any updates on here, check out my Facebook page or my Instagram, which you can find in the links on this site.

Last Con for the year

I've just signed up for the Saginaw Comic Convention at the SVRC Marketplace in Saginaw, Michigan. It takes place September 28th, 2024 from 11-6. Here's a link to their Facebook event page. I'll be displaying and (hopefully) selling original artwork, and drawing caricatures, comic book and cartoon characters. This is one of the drawings I'll have available. It's an 18x24 graphite drawing.

This is the LAST comic convention of 2024.

Art for cons

I've been working on some artwork for the comic conversations I'm participating in.  My next show is in Flint at the Dort Financial Center in the Really Cool Comic Con . I'm also at the Bay City Comic Convention at the Bangor Township Hall in Bay City, Michigan.

Here are a few of my newer pieces:

Drawing Sammy Hagar, pt 3

This is the progress I've made. I'm 13 hours into the drawing (most of that time on the friggin' background!). I need to get this done before the end of May so I can add it to my solo art exhibit in June at Art Reach in Mt. Pleasant, Michigan.

"My Heroes" series on Exhibit!

I don't remember if I've mentioned it here yet, but I was told a couple of months ago that I will be having an exhibit Mount Pleasant, Michigan and in June of 2024 of my heroes series. These are two pieces that I'm working on the charcoal is basically done, the painting of Sergio Aragones  is not done yet. This series is made up of sub sections of some of my heroes, including Sergio Aragones, Jack nicholson, Sammy hagar, popeye, and Mel Brooks.

I INKED!

I'm pretty happy with how this turned out! I NEVER go straight to paper with ink, let alone for a realistic drawing OR with dipping pen and ink!! This took over an hour. Can you tell who it is?

Figure attempt

I've struggled my whole life with drawing figures. I can fake it when I'm looking at reference material, but when I try to draw picture-free, I'm reminded how little I know. This drawing was inspired by the "Black Widow" movie, but I'm drawing the comic style. Just... don't judge too much. I'm a7 delicate friggin' flower.

Only one way to rock

I started a series of artwork of Sammy Hagar era Van Halen after Eddie Van Halen passed away. His death hit harder than I'd expect. I'm always doing Hagar portraits, so I've accumulated a small series of artwork of Sammy Hagar. I was hoping to share my work with fellow Redheads (fans of the Red Rocker Sammy Hagar), but I don't see it happening. So, here's my tribute to Sammy Hagar and Van Halen

I had to make a couple Popeyes in the VOA outfits!!
The drawing below is a drawing I did in high school around 1994, 1995

This week from NUTTALL ART

I've been busy. I started and finished the Jack Nicholson graphite drawing in the last week (about 7 hours spread out in 3 days). It's 11"x15". I finished the Sammy Hagar Oil painting (18"x24") and the Sammy Hagar and the Circle oil painting (24"x18"). I also finished my graphite drawing of Sammy Hagar circa 1978 (24"x18").

A couple of these pieces will be for sale in my Etsy shop soon.

Also, Saturday, October 7, 2023 I will be drawing FREE Caricatures, cartoon and comic book characters at the Annual Rose City Fall Festival in Rose City, Michigan from 12-4.

October 28 I will be at the Clawson Toy and Comic Show from 10am-5pm in Clawson, Michigan selling original artwork, as well as drawing caricatures, cartoon and comic book characters.

Keep On Rockin' (it's an early Sammy Hagar song)

I've been working on this friggin' drawing for a few months off and on. It's 24"x18" graphite on mounted paper. I haven't drawn solo Sammy Hagar in a while.

Gotta say...I kinda hate drawing hair. And guitars. And hands. At least there's no guitar in this one.

Take Me Back (Deja Vu)

I found this drawing I did in my high school art class almost 30 years ago. I drew it sometime between 1992 and 1995. Just graphite pencil on paper. We had to wrap the artwork in plastic, hence the reflections.

Great Scott! Wait for iiitttt....

Today I met the legendary Christopher Lloyd at the Motor City Comic Con today and gave him the painting of him from "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest" I painted for him. He's been one of my favorite actors for decades.

I also met 2 of the main stars of "PSYCH" (one of my and my family's favorite shows), Timothy Omundson and Maggie Lawson, and had great conversations with both.

Due to circumstances, I didn't get to draw or paint anything for them before the convention, and the trip to the convention was very last minute, so I had nothing to gift them.

I drew these two drawings for Maggie Lawson and Timothy Omundson while at the convention in the food court between meeting Miss Lawson and the PSYCH panel.

She left before I could give her the drawings with Me. Omundson, buy I did get to meet him and have a great conversation (he liked my moustache) and gave him the drawings: one for each of them.

Finished What I Started!

It's been a slow process, but I finished the 35"x24" graphite drawing of Van Halen circa 1995!

This is the latest addition to my Van Halen tribute series. Not the best photo of it, but I'll get a better one before it gets framed.

Slow Progression

I posted January 29th a photo of my recent drawing for my Van Halen Tribute series. That photo is here:

This is where that drawing is as of March 24th:

It's been a SLOW drawing. It's a 36"x24"ish graphite drawing. I'm using an HB mechanical pencil (#2 mechanical pencil).

Now, I don't work on it every day, but I work on it a few days a week for 1-4 hours a day.

I've done a drawing or painting for each tour with Sammy Hagar except the OU812 tour. That's the next project, though. I'm trying to do full band images to celebrate what I always loved about the band: teamwork and camaraderie.

Sweet Sweet-Haven

I just finished this picture. It's 23x18 watercolor and ink on paper. I just realized I forgot to add Popeye's granny, but other than that I have the majority of the repeat characters from the Popeye comic strips and books. I didn't include Ham Gravy because he disappeared shortly after Popeye took over the "Thimble Theatre" comic strip.

G.I. Joe Day!

I'm an '80s kid. I grew up with the beginning of Nintendo, the heydays of home video rentals (VHS tape from Blockbuster and Family Video), He-Man, Saturday morning cartoons, and a big part of my youth: G.I. JOE! I had a LOT of figures, and I watched the cartoon. My favorite characters have always been Shipwreck, Sgt. Slaughter and Stalker.

TODAY, February 1st, is apparently G.I. Joe Day! So, to celebrate I thought I'd post some art and a couple other photos related to the Joes.

The photos below were taken in 2016 at the Great Lakes Comic Con in Warren, Michigan, where WWE wrestling Hall of Famer and G.I. Joe alum Sgt. Slaughter and comic creator Larry Hama (creator of the G.I. Joe comic books) were special guests. I drew the photo for Sgt. Slaugher.

'95 Van Halen tour

I've started on a new piece for my Van Halen tribute series. This one is focused on the 1995 Balance tour (I'm creating at least 1 piece from each tour or time frame between 1986 and 1995, the Sammy Hagar years). It's 36"x24", also known as 3ftx2ft, and graphite pencil.

I got to see them twice that tour in 1995, 2 nights in a row. These were the 2nd and 3rd times seeing Van Halen live. The first was in 1993 at Pine Knob Music Theatre in Clarkston, Michigan. The 1995 BALANCE tour was at the Palace of Auburn Hills (no longer around).

5150 Time!!

This is my Van Halen tribute series, Which I began a few months after Eddie Van Halen died in 2020. I'm focusing on the Sammy Hagar era, as that is the time I got into music and the band (and I'm obsessed with Sammy because of VH). I'm not knocking the original lineup; I love Van Halen from 1977 to 1996, I just prefer Sammy. Some of the artwork here has been sold, but most I still have.
