ArtPrize 2021 Web App - Let's Play

This is how ArtPrize works this year! It's like a scavenger hunt: find a code, scan it, reward it to an artist. Watch the video to better understand. My entry number, by the way, is 69751 😁

Meet Me at the B.O.B.

So, I have a drawing entered in the international art contest ArtPrize. You can see my entry info here .

My drawing is a tribute to my favorite band, VAN HALEN, and is on display at the B.O.B. (Big Old Building), on display on the main floor in the H.O.M.E. (House Of Music and Entertainment).

The drawing is based on a photo by Ross Halfin.

The "voting" is changed from previous years. Before, you had to be IN the Grand Rapids area to vote for your favorite piece of artwork, and you'd use the ArtPrize app.

Now, it's more like a scavenger hunt, where guests go around ArtPrize and find QR codes, scan the codes, and some are monetary and some are monetary prizes that you can give to artists directly (through the app, that is). This does give artists a chance to get something rather than nothing. The artist with the most prizes given wins...something. I'm not quite sure. You can see how it all works HERE

ALSO, the drawing is up for auction, and 100% goes to the artist. Here is the link to the auction site, which bidding starts September 16 and ends October 4th. Because this drawing means a lot to me, I have a a larger minimum bid than I would normally ask for a commission project of this size. Once the auction begins, I'll post a direct link.

If you live in or around Grand Rapids, please visit during ArtPrize, September 16-October 3rd, or know people who do,  please share this info with them! I can use all the help I can get!!

I might be at the B.O.B. one of the 3 weekends ArtPrize is taking place, but it's quite a distance, so I'm not sure. If I do, I'll post here.

Junior!

I haven't worked on this drawing for MONTHS, but I started it just after Sean Connery passed away. This is one of my favorite roles of his. He's my 2nd favorite actor, after Jack Nicholson.

Just put a couple hours into it today, and as you can see, not a lot of progress from March 2021.

Prints Available soon!

I don't usually have prints made of my artwork because I'm...well...cheap, but decided to make this series of drawings specifically to have prints made of them. I wanted to make a series of pictures of Marvel Heroes over time starting with the Silver Age of Marvel comics. It's somewhat chronological. I don't have EVERY hero, but I have the important ones and then some. I'm also working on Marvel Villains in the same fashion.

Marvel Hero Heads

I started a project that is inspired by the floating heads used on Marvel Comics covers through to the 2000s, specifically by John Byrne.

This series is kind of a history of Marvel heroes starting with the Silver Age, in (somewhat) chronological order. I have one page to do to finish the heroes. Then onto the VILLAINS (Oy, there are a lot!!)!!

I will have prints available for sale once the series is done.

I Yam What I Yam....Making wut I Wants

I am CONTINUING my Popeye series based on the live action 1980 movie starring Robin Williams. I started it about 12 years ago or more. Some were bought, many ruined in a flood.  But I'm going to show them here, starting with the most recent.

Good Enough (it's a Van Halen song)

After Eddie Van Halen died, I started drawing and painting portraits of Van Halen again for the first time since 1996. This is one of those paintings. Oil on canvas. ALMOST done.

A mad look at my Sergio homage

I finished my tribute drawing of legendary cartoonist Sergio Aragones`.  It's an 24" x 18" graphite drawing on paper. I'm happy with it. I've titled it "Mustachioed Maestro At His Craft".

Van Halen tribute painting

If you don't already know, Van Halen was MY FAVORITE BAND. Sammy Hagar is still my favorite musician, but I wouldn't have discovered the Red Rocker if it wasn't for VAN HALEN in 5th grade. That's when I discovered music as an important part of my life. Anyway, you can read a bit about my VH obsession and Sammy Hagar obsession HERE and HERE.

THIS painting, I feel, as of January 19, 2021 at 9:23am EST , is finished!

I'm not much of a watercolor artist, so I'm leery of making a photo realistic project out of watercolor. But, I had a successful watercolor piece recently and got cocky. Plus, the death of Eddie Van Halen in October 2020 still felt fresh and surprisingly hard to shake. I knew I wanted to do a portrait of Van Halen as a whole (with Sammy, that is. THAT is MY Van Halen. I loved all VH, but like the one offspring in every family, I liked David Lee Roth less). I went through countless images of the band, planning on drawing them in graphite as I appreciated them, as I remember them. It was going to be black and white, and I was doing a colorful oil painting of Eddie and Sammy jamming on stage.

But, once I got the confidence after that little watercolor painting, my mind was set: large, colourful Van Halen tribute in watercolor! I started a NEW search for an image to work from, and found one that was burned into my memory from sophomore year in high school: 1993 Whiskey a-Go-Go concert VH played to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the band playing that venue. It was staggering how the streets around the club were flooded with fans! Police werethere, helicopters and reporters swarming! News reports across the nation covered the hysteria. I was SO jealous because I couldn't be there. But I did see them later that year at Pine Knob Music Theatre in Clarkston, Michigan!

This painting is the BIGGEST watercolor painting I've ever done (before this, I did some 9" x 1 2" illustrations ) at

36" x 24", or 3ft x 2ft. I might enter this into ArtPrize this year!

Invigorated in Art!!

As the year 2021 begins, I've somehow gotten a new lease on creating art! I'm working on 3 separate projects of my own, and I'm excited to work on them, which I haven't felt that way about drawing or painting in...well, years, really! I don't know what it is, but I am enthusiastic about getting back to these projects every day! I even want to skip work, meals and sleep to keep at it!!

These pieces are not being made to sell. Just for me and to maybe put in an exhibit, who knows?

These ARE works in progress. The b&w graphite drawing of cartoonist (and idol) Sergio Aragones`  is 18" x 24"

W.I.P. oil painting of Sammy Hagar and the late Eddie Van Halen is 12" x 1 6"

this image is of my largest watercolor painting ever. I'm not much of a watercolor artist, so this is quite a challenge, at 36" x 24", or 3 ft x 2ft of Van Halen at the Whisky a Go-Go in 1992, I think? Van Halen has been my BAND since I started listening to music in 5th grade. All Van Halen was great, but when I discovered them, Sammy Hagar was the frontman and quickly became my favorite version of VH. This is my tribute to the band who could do no wrong (until Eddie fired Sammy in '96, that is). The VH pics are also in memory of my favorite guitarist (at one point in time), Eddie Van Halen.
